Established in 1955, the Cook Inlet Historical Society (CIHS) is a private non-profit historical society focused on the Anchorage area. Since its founding we have worked to foster discussion, research and publication of the history and ethnography of Anchorage and the Cook Inlet region, as well as of our state and its place in the Circumpolar North.
In that regard, the artifacts and archives collected by CIHS were the start of Collections for the Anchorage Museum in 1968.
The Society actively promotes the public understanding of local history, through:
- Annual Lecture Programs at the Anchorage Museum focussed on an annual theme and coordinated with Museum exhibits.
- Making the CIHS Collection of artifacts and photographs available to the public by transferring it to the Museum’s new Atwood Resource Center.
- Periodic updates of the Alaska Gallery, the Museum’s popular Alaska history display, with recent efforts celebrating the first settlers in our community in the era 1910-35 and the contributions of Native people and corporations to our state.
- Enlivening the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, near the Museum, with gravesite restoration to identify our community’s founders and an annual Summer Solstice walk and lecture at the cemetery to learn more of Anchorage’s early residents.
- Promotion of commemorative activities such as the upcoming Anchorage Centennial.
Please join Cook Inlet Historical Society! Members enjoy benefits such as Museum admission, discounts at the Museum store and café, and regular opportunities to learn more about local history.
